In Sri Lanka’s North Central Plains, 182 kilometers from Colombo, lies Minneriya National Park, with Polonnaruwa as the closest major city.
The centerpiece of the park is the historic, restored Minneriya Reservoir, which irrigates a vast portion of the region. Situated within an elephant corridor linking Kaudulla and Wasgamuwa, the park offers incredible wildlife viewing year-round. The ideal time to visit is from May to October, coinciding with the world-famous gathering of wild elephants.
Spanning 8,889 hectares, Minneriya features a tropical monsoon climate, ranging in elevation from 100 to 885 meters. The park is home to 24 mammal species, including leopards, sloth bears, deer, and wild buffalo, making a Minneriya safari tour an absolute must for wildlife lovers. Booking a guided Minneriya elephant safari is the best way to witness the massive herds up close. Beyond pachyderms, the reserve protects 9 amphibian species, 25 reptile species like the Mugger Crocodile and endemic Red-lipped Lizard, and rich freshwater fish populations in the ancient tank.
