Horton Plains National Park is undoubtedly one of the most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.
Situated between Kirigalpotta and Totapola, the island's second and third highest peaks. This dramatic plateau features cloud forests, rolling grasslands, rushing waterfalls, and misty peaks.
Most travelers stay overnight in Nuwara Eliya before taking an early morning taxi or tuk-tuk to the plateau. The dry season from January to March is the best time to visit, offering clear blue skies before the morning mist rolls in. Exploring this pristine wilderness is among the top things to do in Horton Plains, especially for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
The park is a sanctuary for over 750 plant species and 150 animal species, making it a true paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife lovers. While trekking, keep an eye out for sambar deer, giant squirrels, purple-faced langurs, endemic lizards, and rare highland birds with occasional sightings of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard.
The highlight of the park is the famous World’s End, a sheer cliff where the plateau abruptly plunges over 800 meters. On clear mornings, you can gaze across the lowlands all the way to the southern coastline. The circular 9-kilometer World’s End loop trail is well-marked, beginner-friendly, and offers an unforgettable journey through Sri Lanka’s majestic Central Highlands.
